Handy Hints
Don't think you can't do it, remember Steven Spielberg started out making films in his own backyard with broomsticks, buckets and his brother. |
Borrow "My Date With Drew" from the video store and find out how one young
man made a doco-drama with a borrowed camera and $1100.00 that became a hit
across the globe. You don't even need money just a bit of help from
your friends and family, a couple of DVDs & some ingenuity.
Like Spielberg use the props and
resources from your own life.
Choose your locations from any one of the hundreds of fabulous locations
around the Tweed.
Script your short film; remember, even a documentary has a sequence of
events from beginning, middle & through to an end. Move the action
along using a method called "Forward Narrative Drive". Quite simply
this means to cut out anything that is not relevant.
You should consider that your film is not just for you and your family or
a group of your peers. Ask others (teachers, mentors, members of
the community) for constructive criticism.
Execution is important; a good story will be lost in poor execution.
For instance!
Hold your camera still and/or use a tripod.
Use the playback mode to check your footage before moving onto the next
scene - don't worry about doing things over and over again, some of the
best directors do scores of takes.
Shoot close on your subject.
Remember to start rolling the camera a few seconds before the action and
to keep rolling for a few seconds
after to allow for the editing process.
Do a good tight edit.
